A Girl Given Life; A Woman Healed

Wednesday, March 14 – Read Mark 5:21-43

Jesus continues his healing ministry back in Jewish territory. A girl nearing adulthood is raised when Jesus goes into her home, takes her hand, and calls her back to life. Along the way, a woman suffering from constant bleeding is cured when she merely touches Jesus’ robe as he passes through the crowd. When he senses what has happened and asks who has touched him, she is immediately ashamed and afraid. In her condition she is unclean and having touched Jesus, she has rendered him unclean. She expects condemnation. Instead, Jesus calls her “daughter”, commends her faith, and sends her off in peace. Here and elsewhere, the attention he gives to children and women is remarkable in his patriarchal society. Clearly everyone is a child of God.

Reflection Questions: Who in your circle of acquaintances is like the woman who is suffering and made to be an outcast because of her condition? How might your attention and care change that person’s life?

Prayer: Dear God, help me pay attention others’ needs. Use me to offer your care and love. Amen.
