15 – Read Mark 3:13-19; 6:6b-13
Many followed Jesus and often traveled
and ate with him. But Jesus called twelve to be disciples and apostles (meaning
that he would send them out on missions of ministry). In Mark’s account, when
Jesus calls them he takes them up on a mountain, a place considered closer to
God (think Moses receiving the 10 Commandments). Then in Mark 6, having had
time to teach them, Jesus sends the twelve out to proclaim the good news of the
coming kingdom of God, and to heal the sick and cast out demons. Jesus sends
them out with no provisions other than the authority he gives them. They are to
trust God and Jesus’ directions.
Reflection Questions: Do you feel yourself to be one of
Jesus’ disciples? What is your sense of how he has called you? What has been your
response?
Prayer: Dear God, I feel like I need so many
provisions to keep myself safe and to be prepared to follow Jesus. Help me
trust your guidance and direction. Amen.
