17 – Read Matthew 14:22-33
After feeding so many people in so many
ways, Jesus needs time alone with God. He sends his disciples on ahead across
the Sea of Galilee, while he goes up a mountain to pray. Later, he comes walking
to them across the water. Peter, who sometimes speaks before he thinks, asks
Jesus if he can step out of the boat and come to him. Jesus says, “Yes,” but
then has to rescue Peter when his faith gives way to his fear of the waves.
Reflection Questions: In the Gospels, so much of what we
are able to do – even of what Jesus is able to do for us – is dependent on the
strength of our faith. But faith is not an abstract belief like the belief we
have that the planet Saturn has rings. Rather it is a personal conviction that
we act on and organize our lives around. So what is the strength of your faith
in Jesus? How does your faith change the way that you act?
Prayer: Dear God, give me faith to “step out
on the water” and do something like Jesus today. Amen.
