The Call of Levi and Grumblings about Sinners

Friday, March 9 – Read Mark 2:13-17

Tax collectors worked for the Romans and often cheated the Jewish people they taxed. They were considered traitors and were roundly hated and condemned as sinners. Yet Jesus calls Levi to be his disciple and ends up criticized by Pharisees (Jewish religious leaders who prided themselves in keeping the law of Moses).

Reflection Questions: What do you make of Jesus reaching out to an outcast to join his closest circle? Are there acquaintances of yours who are usually excluded, but who would be delighted for an invitation to join your circle of friends?

Prayer: Dear God, please help me improve my vision. Help me see those who are standing outside the circle of your love waiting for an invitation from someone like me. Amen.
