Parables of the Kingdom

Monday, March 12 – Read Matthew 13:31-33; 44-50

Here are five short parables of the kingdom of heaven. The essential message that Jesus preached was that in his ministry God was bringing the kingdom of heaven to earth so that ultimately sin and despair and death will be replaced with love and hope and eternal life. At the time of his ministry, the coming of the kingdom of God was so much a part of his culture that we don’t always realize today that it was the center around which everything that Jesus did turned. But it was. His miracles, his teachings, his authority to forgive sins – all were signs of the kingdom.

Reflection Questions: The first two parables have to do with the growth of the kingdom. The second two parables focus on the importance of the kingdom. The last concerns our own reaction to the news of the kingdom. How important is the kingdom of God to you? With Christ’s help, how do you create the kingdom and cause it to come to life in what you do and how you relate to others?

Prayer: Dear God, help me be a catalyst for your kingdom to come to life this very day. Amen.
